Faced with what it calls Washington\u2019s \u201carm-twisting\u201d on trade, India has drawn a clear line: no compromise on core economic interests, and no bowing to unilateral tariff pressures.<\/p>\n

In a move aimed at insulating its exporters from the impact of US duties, New Delhi has set up a high-level inter-ministerial committee<\/strong> to identify and eliminate bottlenecks in outbound trade. The panel will include senior officials from commerce, finance, industry, textiles, agriculture and external affairs ministries, as well as state governments, industry bodies and trade experts.<\/p>\n

\u201cIndia will not sacrifice the interests of its farmers and dairy producers,\u201d Prime Minister Narendra Modi has told the US in no uncertain terms.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

A Strategic Counter to Pressure<\/strong><\/h3>\n

At the heart of the dispute is Washington\u2019s decision to impose selective import tariffs on Indian goods \u2014 a tactic seen by New Delhi as an attempt to force concessions in broader trade negotiations. The new committee\u2019s remit is to reduce the direct and indirect damage<\/strong> to India\u2019s exports, especially in sensitive sectors.<\/p>\n

Significantly, Modi has made it clear that India\u2019s ongoing trade with Russia will not be halted \u201cunder any circumstances.\u201d Russia is a key supplier of energy and defence equipment to India, including the Su-57 fighter jets \u2014 a choice that reportedly irked Washington after New Delhi declined to consider the American F-35.<\/p>\n

The US response, officials here believe, has been two-pronged: punitive tariffs and a tilt towards Pakistan, despite what India calls Islamabad\u2019s \u201cproven sponsorship of terrorism\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Sectoral Impact<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The brunt of the tariffs is expected to be felt in pharmaceuticals, textiles, automobiles, engineering goods, agriculture, and IT services<\/strong>. While the scale of impact will depend on the specific duties and targeted products, analysts agree that India\u2019s competitiveness in these areas is under strain.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn this climate, speed, transparency and cost-efficiency in export processes are no longer optional \u2014 they\u2019re essential,\u201d<\/em> a senior trade official told The Indian Express<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The high-level panel will look at:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Reducing delays in the export clearance process<\/li>\n
  • Aligning often-contradictory rules between ministries<\/li>\n
  • Streamlining export incentives, duty drawback schemes and financing options<\/li>\n
  • Providing urgent relief to sectors hit hardest by the tariffs<\/li>\n
  • Identifying alternative markets<\/strong> to reduce over-reliance on the US<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Building the Alternative Path<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    India has already begun expanding digital trade portals<\/strong> to speed up export approvals, including enhancements to the ICE-Gate<\/em> customs platform. Steps have been taken to simplify tax and duty refunds, increase container handling capacity at major ports, and improve road\/rail connectivity through dedicated freight corridors.<\/p>\n

    On the diplomatic front, India is pursuing new and upgraded Free Trade Agreements<\/strong> with ASEAN, the European Union, the UAE and the UK, while also deepening access to African markets. Support schemes for micro and small exporters \u2014 including training, credit guarantees and subsidies \u2014 are in the pipeline.<\/p>\n

    Resilience in Numbers<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    According to the Chamber of Commerce<\/strong>, the overall hit from US tariffs is expected to be contained \u2014 a mere 1.87% drop in exports<\/strong> and 0.19% of GDP<\/strong>. While the textile industry may feel the sting, emerging market access is likely to cushion the blow.<\/p>\n

    The global \u201cChina+1\u201d supply chain strategy, which encourages diversification away from China, positions India advantageously. An SBI report notes \u201chuge scope\u201d for growth in chemicals, textiles and agricultural products<\/strong>, offering a platform for \u201cBrand India\u201d to expand its global footprint.<\/p>\n

    A Long-Term Play<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    The Modi government\u2019s flagship \u2018Make in India\u2019<\/strong> and \u2018Atmanirbhar Bharat\u2019<\/strong> programmes are already boosting production capacity. A \u20b920,000-crore export promotion policy has been announced to support this drive.<\/p>\n

    \u201cThis committee is not just a shield; it\u2019s a launchpad for India\u2019s export ambitions,\u201d<\/em> says a senior commerce ministry source.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    If its plans materialise, India aims to emerge as a $2-trillion export economy<\/strong> in the coming years \u2014 turning the tariff challenge into an opportunity for strategic realignment and market expansion.<\/p>\n
