When Peter Navarro dismisses the Modi\u2013Putin\u2013Xi engagement at the SCO as \u201ctroublesome,\u201d he betrays less an analysis of geopolitics and more a symptom of Washington\u2019s unease at losing its monopoly on shaping global alignments.<\/p>\n

Washington\u2019s critics have seen this movie before. Whenever powers beyond the U.S.\u2013Europe axis try to shape the world order, Washington reflexively brands it \u201ctroublesome.\u201d Bandung in 1955 was dismissed as irrelevant by the U.S. establishment. Non-Aligned Movement summits were caricatured as talk shops. The BRICS initiative was long mocked before it began building financial institutions to rival the IMF and World Bank.<\/p>\n

Navarro\u2019s anxiety is not about Moscow, Beijing, or even New Delhi\u2014it is about the slow erosion of a system where the United States dictates the terms of engagement.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cWhenever others gather without Washington, the script is predictable: suspicion, derision, and lectures.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The SCO as a counter-narrative<\/h3>\n

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) was born as a Eurasian security grouping, but its evolution into an energy, trade, and technology dialogue platform directly challenges the American model of bilateral patronage. For India, the SCO is not about ideology; it is about geography and connectivity\u2014Central Asia\u2019s energy grids, Eurasian transit corridors, and a market that America cannot physically anchor itself into.<\/p>\n

Navarro\u2019s sneer at the Modi\u2013Putin\u2013Xi meeting fails to acknowledge that the SCO is no longer a marginal club\u2014it represents nearly half the world\u2019s population and a growing share of its GDP.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cTo call half the planet \u2018troublesome\u2019 is less analysis, more insecurity.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Double standards in Washington\u2019s critique<\/h3>\n

Navarro frames Eurasian engagement as \u201cprofiteering\u201d or \u201cproblematic.\u201d Yet the United States signs oil deals with Saudi Arabia despite human rights concerns, courts Vietnam despite war memories, and woos Africa for rare earths.<\/p>\n

If Washington reserves the right to balance pragmatism with principle, why should India be judged differently?<\/p>\n

\u201cAmerican diplomacy cloaks profit in principle, but calls others\u2019 pragmatism \u2018profiteering.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

India\u2019s autonomy, not America\u2019s anxiety<\/h3>\n

For New Delhi, the meeting with Putin and Xi was neither an embrace of China nor a rebuke to the United States. It was an assertion that India will talk to all, balance all, and build leverage everywhere.<\/p>\n

The very premise of \u201cwith us or against us\u201d belongs to a bygone Cold War. Today\u2019s India is too large, too integrated, and too confident to be slotted into Washington\u2019s binaries.<\/p>\n

The historical echo<\/h3>\n

Indira Gandhi\u2019s Moscow axis, Vajpayee\u2019s Washington opening, and Modi\u2019s Eurasian pivot are not contradictions\u2014they are continuities of Indian diplomacy that refuses to mortgage sovereignty. To call that troublesome is to misunderstand India\u2019s DNA.<\/p>\n

The Modi\u2013Putin\u2013Xi triangle is not an alternative to the U.S. It is a reminder that no single power gets to police the chessboard.<\/p>\n

The real trouble lies elsewhere<\/h3>\n

Washington should look inward. The \u201cAmerica First\u201d trade wars, the weaponisation of the dollar, and the selective sanctioning of rivals have already alienated allies. If Navarro sees \u201ctrouble\u201d in Eurasia, it is because U.S. unilateralism has created space for multipolarity.<\/p>\n
