As Washington sharpens its focus on decoupling India from China, Trump\u2019s envoy signals urgency on a trade pact\u2014while clarifying America\u2019s stance on Russian oil. This is more than commerce; it\u2019s a strategic gambit to reshape Asia\u2019s power balance.<\/p>\n

In Washington\u2019s latest diplomacy lexicon, three phrases recur often: \u201cpull India away from China\u201d, \u201ctrade deal in reach\u201d, and \u201ccrystal clear on Russian oil\u201d. At his confirmation hearing, Sergio Gor, Donald Trump\u2019s nominee for U.S. Ambassador to India, set the tone: trade disputes are nearly resolved, but America insists India stop buying Russian oil. Underneath these polished statements lies a complex set of pressures, choices and risks for India \u2014 a nation balancing strategic autonomy with economic necessity.<\/p>\n

\u201cAmerica wants India siding less with China \u2014 but wants us buying less oil from Russia too.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

U.S. Strategy: Leverage, Threats and Alliances<\/h3>\n

Gor didn\u2019t mince words. The United States sees India not as a bystander, but as a crucial actor in its emerging Indo-Pacific strategy. \u201cPulling India away from China\u201d is now official U.S. foreign policy language. The U.S. push, though forceful, underestimates the domestic political cost of perceived subservience.<\/p>\n
